Cell Phone Spell Check Causes Texters to Sound Like Bigots

My “smart” phone is putting words into my mouth, and it’s making me seem ignorant.

Text from Jonathan: “I’m coming over”
Reply from me: “Gay!”

Only I didn’t mean to use the word “gay”– I actually typed “yay.” But my Blackberry doesn’t recognize yay as a word. Blackberry’s first choice in spell check is “gay,” and I often select it by mistake when I’m in a hurry.

It’s not like I’m accidentally choosing “frog,” or “lamp,” or other random words which wouldn’t make sense in the context of my text messages. Instead, gay sounds like the opposite of what I really mean, and I sound like a jerk.

“I’m getting married!”
“Gay.”

“We are going on vacation!”
“Gay.”

“I just met Lou Ferrigno!”
“Gay!”

Don’t worry, you won’t run into problems like this when you type lol, omg, brb, or ttyl. Blackberry recognizes them as real words.
